Rep. Louie Gohmert (TX-01) released the following statement concerning the situation in Syria and President Obama's decision to call upon Congress for action:
"President Obama has had a full year since he articulated his 'red line' on use of chemical weapons in Syria. If the President were serious about this, he would have used this time to build a coalition of willing nations and would have worked with Congress to build a consensus to move forward. Perhaps those actions would have served as a deterrent to the use of chemical weapons by either side. We have no clear goal in Syria and no national security interest given that any weakening or toppling of the Assad regime would likely lead to even more chemical weapons falling into the hands of al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood. The vote on a resolution to empower this President’s disastrous foreign policy should be one of 'no confidence.'"
Congressman Louie Gohmert is the Vice Chair of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security. Prior to being elected to serve in Congress, Louie was elected to three terms as District Judge in Smith County, Texas. He also served as Chief Justice of Texas'12th Court of Appeals.
