Sometimes we get so frustrated with the political process and politicians themselves that we forget they can do good things for our communities. We were reminded of that recently with visits to Caddo Lake by U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert. Both have been good friends of Caddo, one of our natural East Texas treasures. They have taken steps to direct help needed to save the lake — Texas’ only natural lake — from the ravages of giant salvinia. Hutchison also gained finan...

A Republican congressman's attempts to get a vote on his long-stalled bill mandating that servicemembers be paid even if the government shuts down has pit him against the White House and his own congressional leadership. Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas re-introduced a bill that has been stuck in committee since he first filed it in March -- the last time party differences over a federal money issue threatened military pay. As such, he continued to display his ignorance of the geographical reality that a contiguous Hamas-Fatah state bordering Jordan and Egypt, as stipulated in both speeches, means a noncontiguous Israel. ...

Some self-described conservatives are pushing to pass a bill called the “Help ...

Now, some lawmakers are calling for foreign aid to be cut off to the nuclear-armed nation. When former President George W. Bush declared a war on terror in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, Pakistan p...
