Gohmert on President Trump’s Recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital
Washington, December 6, 2017
Congressman Louie Gohmert (TX-01) released the following statement today regarding President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the decision to begin the process of moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem:
“President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the rightful capital of Israel was not only an act of political valor, it was a promise kept to the American people who voted him into office.”
“This acknowledgement is a historic move for this nation – it’s symbolic. It refuses to continue playing the game of ignoring the fact that except for the 7 ½ years King David ruled Israel from Hebron before moving it to Jerusalem, Jerusalem was the acknowledged capital of Israel sixteen hundred years or so before Mohammed lived. It is also a fact that Jerusalem is never mentioned by name in the Koran. Most Presidents have acknowledged that. We now have a President who puts words to action. It is refreshing. It is about time the rest of the world recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.”
“The announcement today displays great strength and courage. It shows that the United States will stand with its ally, Israel. I sincerely appreciate President Trump’s decision to buck the status quo and do the right thing for this nation and the world.”
Congressman Gohmert is the Vice Chairman of the Natural Resources Committee and the Vice Chair of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security. Prior to being elected to serve in Congress, he was elected to three terms as District Judge in Smith County, Texas and was appointed by then Texas Governor Rick Perry to complete a term as Chief Justice of the 12th Court of Appeals.
